Dr Aslam Amod
Dr Aslam Amod graduated from the University of Natal in 1988 and holds fellowships from both the College of Physicians in South Africa and the Royal College of Physicians in London, specialising in Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is a Consultant Endocrinologist at the Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital and is also a lecturer at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. Dr. Amod’s international contributions include numerous lectures, presentations at prestigious congresses and publications in esteemed journals. He has served as a key national investigator and a member of international steering committees and expert panels and large diabetes and cardiovascular and kidney outcomes trials. Aslam has held executive roles and chaired various medical societies and is currently an executive member of The Faculty of Consulting Physicians of South Africa (FCPSA), and The Society of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes of South Africa (SEMDSA). He leads the professional group that formulates the guidelines for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in South Africa. Aslam is also the recipient of many awards including the Chatsworth 50-Year Shield of Recognition for “Service Above Self”

Prof Zaheer Bayat
Professor Zaheer Bayat is a specialist physician and endocrinologist based in Gauteng, South Africa. He serves as Head of Internal Medicine at Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital, an academic teaching hospital affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand. He also consults in private practice at the Centre for Integrative Health (Sandton Medi-Clinic and Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital) and is a director of the Lenasia Clinical Trial and Research Unit. He has made sustained contributions to academic medicine through clinical teaching, research supervision, and health service leadership. He has supervised 13 MMed degrees to completion and is currently supervising a further 10. His scholarly output includes over 40 publications, strengthening evidence-based practice, training quality, and service delivery. Professor Bayat is the immediate past Chairperson of the Society for Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa (SEMDSA) and has served on the organising committees of major national and international scientific meetings. He has contributed to key national and international guidelines in diabetes, thyroid disease, obesity, and Ramadan-focused diabetes care. Internationally, recognised as an invited speaker and educator, he continues to influence endocrinology practice and training nationally and across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr Heleen Bierman
Dr Heleen Bierman qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Orange Free State in 1996 and then went on to do her BSC ( Hons)Aerospace Medicine in 2005 at the University of Pretoria . In 2009 she qualified as a specialist physician at the University of Pretoria and went on to sub-specialise in the field of Nephrology. She was head of the department nephrology from 2011-2012. In 2020 Dr Bierman received her certificate of Nephrology at the European Society of Nephrology. She joined private practice from 2012-2021 at Pretoria Urology Hospital, Jacaranda Hospital and Cintocare Hospital . She has overseen almost 9k patients in the last 4 years with numerous kidney disorders, kidney transplants and dialysis patients. She goes the extra mile to visit the patients often in outlining areas for example Giyani, Elim,Louis Trichardt , Thohoyandou, Nelspruit, Ermelo etc. She runs her own peritoneal dialysis clinic from her rooms and have patients from Cape town to Malelaan on this form of dialysis. Her practice is a centre off excellence and she prides herself at providing evidence based nephrology care. This explains the high demand for her attention.

He serves as Head of the Department of Prevention and Care of Diabetes, with a focus on diabetes prevention, early detection and comprehensive care strategies.

Dr Elmo Pretorius
Dr Elmo Pretorius is originally from Somerset West. After matriculating as one of the top 20 students in the Western Cape from Parel Vallei High School in 2000 he studied medicine (MB,ChB) at Stellenbosch University which he obtained cum laude in 2006. After his 2-year internship which he performed at Helen Joseph and Rahima Moosa Hospitals in Johannesburg, he returned to the Western Cape for community service at Khayelitsha Site B community health centre and Eerste River District Hospital. In 2010, he started working as a medical officer in internal medicine at Tygerberg Academic Hospital. He commenced training as a registrar in internal medicine in the same year and rotated through cardiology, pulmonology, critical care, nephrology, neurology, infectious diseases, endocrinology and general internal medicine. He was admitted as a fellow of the college of physicians of South Africa and qualified as a specialist physician in 2014. He also obtained his Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) degree from Stellenbosch University in the same year. He was awarded the SEMDSA (Society for endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes of South Africa) fellowship which allowed him to subspecialise in endocrinology and metabolism at Tygerberg Academic Hospital. He passed the certificate in the subspeciality of endocrinology of the college of physicians of South Africa and is registered as an endocrinologist with the health professions council since 2017. He was also awarded a masters degree in endocrinology from Stellenbosch University.

Marli Conradie-Smit is Head of Endocrinology at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Academic Hospital. She is primarily a practicing clinician, with involvement in research, especially related to the field of obesity. She is a member of the Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of SA (SEMDSA) and Execute committee member of the SA Metabolic Medicine and Surgery Society (SAMMSS). She is involved in drafting guidelines and policies at a national level. She is actively involved in teaching, learning and assessment activities at a local and national level.

Dr Wayne May
Dr Wayne May is a UCT graduate currently working as a full-time Endocrinologist in private practice at the Kingsbury Hospital in Cape Town He works with his wife, a diabetologist, in the Diabetes Life Clinic, which is a multidisciplinary clinic treating patients living with diabetes He has a special interest in obesity management and in 2005 helped form the Cape Town Bariatric Clinic(previously known as the Chrysalis Clinic), which is anaccredited multidisciplinary clinic managing people living with obesity through the process of bariatric surgery, as well as looking at non-surgical options He is the author of the section on obesity management in the South African Diabetes Guidelines (SEMDSA) 2012 and 2017. He holds an International ScopeObesity Certifi cate and is also a director of the South African Metabolic Medicine and Surgical Society (SAMMSS). He is the current co-chair of the 1 SAObesity Guidelines.

Prof Zane Stevens
Specialist Physician and Endocrinologist at Cape Institute of Endocrinology. Currently in endocrine private practice at Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, Cape Town, with a specific interest in diabetes, thyroid disease and osteoporosis. Previous Associate consultant/lecturer in the Division of Endocrinology at Stellenbosch University involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology 2014-2018. Member of the task force for creating and publishing South African Hypothyroidism guidelines 2015. Co-author of the Insulin chapter in the 2017 SEMDSA guidelines for the management of type 2 DM. Executive council member of the South African National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOFSA). Specific interest in Fracture Liaison Services (FLS). South African Colleges of Medicine examiner for the sub specialization in Endocrinology & Metabolism (FCP). Founding member of the Cape Thyroid Forum MDT for thyroid cancers and combined structural/functional thyroid disease. Have served on a number of local and international advisory boards for various pharmaceutical companies. Speaker/lecturer regularly at CME events in the areas of diabetes, thyroid disease and osteoporosis.

Mr Salih Hendricks (Patient Study)
Salih Hendricks is a South African Diabetes Amputee Advocate and shares his lived experience with many around the world on platforms and institutions like DEDOC.org, WHO, IDF, Diabetes South Africa, SA Diabetes Advocacy, the American Limb Preservation Society, Bromley Diabetes UK Peer Support Group, American Diabetes Association, EASD, Global PAD Association USA and Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a board member of Diabetes South Africa and South African Diabetes Advocacy. Member of IDF Blue Circle and dedocvoices. He does peer support and motivational talks on awareness and prevention of diabetes complications and amputations. He is always promoting diabetes education, awareness, and prevention.

Prof Jeremy Nel
Professor Jeremy Nel is a distinguished physician and infectious diseases specialist, and the head of infectious diseases at Helen Joseph Hospital and the University of the Witwatersrand. He holds a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the Royal College of Physicians and has previously completed a fellowship in transplant infectious diseases at the University of North Carolina. Local contributions of note include his role as past president of the Infectious Diseases Society of South Africa (FIDSSA), previous appointment on the Ministerial Advisory Committee in South Africa and editorial roles on several infectious diseases’ journals. Professor Nel continues to shape local practice through his significant academic and clinical contributions, this including local treatment and prevention protocols and guidelines for both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Prof Paul Rheeder
Professor Paul Rheeder is a trained specialist physician (MMed and FCP) with a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology obtained from Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He occupied the Medihelp Chair in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Pretoria for 10 years. He is past Acting Head of the School of Health Systems and Public Health, University of Pretoria. Currently he is employed as Specialist Physician at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Department of Internal Medicine. His main research interest is in improving management and outcomes of patients with diabetes mellitus. He is a past member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Prevention in Cardiology. He has contributed to more than 100 peer reviewed publications. He is married with 3 children and 4 grandchildren.
